Project 3 Object: ideas for final images

After talking with tutor on thursday's tutorial. I have decided to refine the final image with ideas of turning each of the 3 objects into 'world wonders'___Food wonders(?)

1) Turning fruitbix bites into stonehedge and exploding volcanoe with lava
I will manipulate the lighting and colours to achieve these images

2) Turning sugar cubes into glaciers and the watercube (beijing olympic)
I think that when the sugar cubes are illuminated by lights from the inside, the effect is really appealing.

3) Turning chocolate pretzels into a tiki character and a mysterious/scary face(mask)

I will do the another batch of photos in the weekend to produce these images before the final handin on tuesday 13th Oct.

Project 3 Object: 3rd photoshoot_part 2

Edited photos of the 3rd photoshoot:

Fruitbix-scape
Here I used the fruitbix bites to stack up to create a cityscape.
1)The lighting at the back was created by a phone touch.. That creates the city streets with car lights at the back.
2)

3) This image I wanted to create the horror feel to it with the red lighting and the reflection made this image interesting. Almost like rock mountains reflection on a red river.

4) Fruitbix-cave- the white balance was a bit off in this image, but it still portrayed the idea of the fruitbix pieces creating a cave, the flaky texture of the fruitbix imitates the cave like rock textures.

Revenge of the Pretzel :)
This two image was taken on a light table with the red sheet on top, and no other external lighting. This created the mysterious shape with no define texture, which added the element of mysterious-ness.

1) Pretzels that looks like a face

2) Odd one out.

The following two images are taken with a spotlight. Here I am trying to create the feeling that the pretzels are like aerobics figure standing up.

I could improve this image by using lighting to cast shadows that makes them look like they are standing up/staggering up like aerobics in a circus.
I think the fruitbix-scape was quite successful and I could continuing exploring that object.
The pretzel was good too, but I have to decided what I want to create with it.
The most important thing is I need to decide what is the overall theme with 3 objects, do they need to have a narrative that relate to one another? Or do I want each of them to represent different things but at the end is about the same topic, like revenge of the FOOD. I will need to think hard about this and decided within the next few days.
Also, I still need to carry out my experiement that I wanted to do transforming the heads of match sticks into raspberries.

Project 3 Object: 3rd photoshoot_part 1

With the previous 2 photoshoots, I'm still a bit unsure as to what I want to photography. But this time I had better ideas in how I'd photography my objects and a compact camera that will give me better results.

The objects I had with me was all FOOD. I decided it was suitable to use food because they are readily accessible that I could get hold of anytime, and there are so many varietys and shapes that I could chose from.

Today I went into the studio with
-fruitybix bits, which shaped like bricks

-Chocolate pretzels

I also experiement with different colour lighting, which was quite funny to play with and it completely transforms the mood of the image.

Project 3 Object: 2nd photoshoot

Second photoshoot I wanted to experiement with matches to see if I could create something cool. I set up a mini studio at home and I had burrowed my friend's bridge camera, so I wanted to try and get familiar with the camera.

Here are the images that I think was good:

The composition of this image reminds me of a waterway or riverside. I could improve this image by adjusting the lighting, but because this was done at home it wasn't possible. Also adjusting the focus and the angles, maybe even go closer.

I like this image because from looking at it at a glance, you don't really know that it's matches, kind looks like a bunch of flowers.

This got me thinking. I could manipulate the matches to look like raspberrys! To transform it from it's original function- part of the brief.

Next step:

I wanted to keep the options open, and experiment with more objects. As well as go to the photogrpahy room to use the different lighting on the objects.

Project 3 Object: Edited photos from initial shoot

Here are the edited photos from initial photo shoot. I experiemented with the beans and trying to liquify them by doing the pouring action. After this photoshoot, I was not very satisfied with the results, I am thinking of choosing more interesting objects to create more interesting and creative images.

Also this photoshoot was taken with my Canon 50D, with 18-135mm lens which was not very useful in taking close up photos. I will experiement further with a normal/compact camera to achieve the close up more focused result.

Pouring. Liquidfying the beans.

Dancing beans :)

Standing out.

Project 3 Object: Inspiration Ideas + decision on objects

I have researched on the internet on creative photography and Macro mystery themed photography. Here are the images that I found successful and I could learn from them.

Sticky notes - Repetitive patterning to create an image.

Holes in a grater - Closes up on an image so it appears differently than in it's typical form.

Onion - Extreme close ups to make an image appear different from it's form, some beautiful textures and images could derive from that. Like this onion, appears to be a very beautiful form kind of like a dress or something nice and graceful like that.

In side of a hard drive - Almost like a city scape inside that plastic cover. I'd alway wondered whta the inside of the incredible machine looks like.

Eye? - This was a very cool but scary photo at the same time of an eye. When I first looked at this image I though it was a key hole.

Human eye - I find this image quite nice, the focus is on the eye and the clock face on it.
The 10 objects that I want to explore:
1. Scarf
2. Match sticks
3. Pins with coloured heads
4. Grapes/ fruits
5. Beans
6. Glasses
7. Pearl necklace
8. fruitbix bites
9. sugar cubes
10. Chocolate pretzels
Next step will be to pick a few of the above item and begin shooting!

Project 3 Objects: Studio exercise

In studio we were introduced to 15mm lens which is appropiate to use for object photography/close ups. Also we have learnt to use lighting and coloured sheets creatively to create a particular mood. I find this studio very useful, as I didn't have any idea on how to manipulate the lighting and colours to help me achieve certain moods for an image.

The following images are the work from the class which I think is successful:

I like this one because the composition was good, its the cord of an old-style telephone. The red colour gives the sinister or mysterious atmosphere and the airy feeling that leaves the audience wondering what is happening at the time this image was taken.

I like the focus and the composition in this image.

In contrast, without the red colour to accompany this image. I still find this image very interesting, as it's a narrative image that is telling a story or a moment. It is nicely framed too.

This was very cleverly done. Kinda of like macro mystery. I had no idea what this object was until I looked at other images. It is the top of a bike helmet. The first thought that came to my head was that it was a machine or something related to starwars?? This was very interesting image as it triggers audience interest and their imagination. I could learn from this image to manipulate objects so that it does not appear in their usual form. Creates interests and triggers audience imagination.

Even though this image's focus was off, I really like the way the light at back creates a special effect. That it reminds me of something similar in movies where an amazing object was going to appear. The suspense and tension within the image. I could consider this effect in my images with the lighting shining directing behind the object to create that bright 'glare'.

Project 3 Object: Precedants

After the introduction lecture on Project 3, I went on the internet to research on some creative photography that has been done by other people to get inspirations.

This is my favourite image. The objects are two bottle caps together which makes them look like a mouth with teeth.

Colourful pins. Kind of reminds me of a parade of guns.

This page of objects was taken my Levi Brown, a well-known photographer. I particularly like the explosions of the beams or rices particles that was throw into the air.

This image was the most humourous one out of all of the above. An apple was created by two halves of different colour.

Project 3 Object: Proposal

Project 3 is about photographing things/ojects, it could be anything from food to utensils.
-The aim is to create 'new identities' for and emotional responses from these lifeless objects.
-through the act of photographing chosen objects, we are to transform them so they no-longer relate to their original function.

For this assignment I want to thouroughly understand what the assessment requirements was so I could aim at them directly which will help me in achieving higher in this project.
1) Ability to imaginatively explore photographic vision
2) Quality and coherance in your concept
3) Effective technical control
4) Evidence of research and successful understanding of visual precedants
5) Evidence of documentation of and reflection upon project's process.

With the above in mind, the next step would be chosing the appropiate objects that will help me achieve a series of imaginative and creative images which transforms an object to be something else. It would be good to have the element of humour in these images, which will make it more effective and more engaging to the audience.

Also it would be helpful to research on existing images that are successful on how other photographers manipulate objects to become something. Almost like empowering an object so it could be transformed to something else.

I would need to experiement with lighting, as I believe that lighting would have a huge affect on how well the image will turn out and what kind of atmosphere and mood I'm giving to the object.

Project 2 People: Final images

After some editing on the most successful images that I took, I have narrowed it down to the final series with 5 photos.

The main idea behind this series is showing that the basketball courts is a space where people from different races, ages and background can come together and play. Once you are on the courts, you become part of the team, doesn't matter how old you are, where you've come from.

Everyone is the same on court, they are all part of one team.

1)Initially being introduced to a group of people in a huddle. Leaving questions about what they are doing.

2)Zooming out to show that they are in a basketball game, movement, youth, energy and passion is shown by the players in this game.

3)Spectating, a group of young people sits on the sideline and watches the older kids in awe, admiring their swift skills in the game. Wishing in their heads they could be as skill as them.

4)On the otherside, a man in working overalls sits and looks. Him too, wanting to play even though he might seem out of the league because of his age and background.

5)Once again the gathering of people in a huddle, Mirroring the first image. But this time is the spectactors player, showing that in the basketball court is a place where people from all walks of life and still enjoy and be passionate about their favourite game.

Once you're on court, you're the same as everyone else.

Project 2 People: 2nd photoshoot, Edited images

Here are the best images from 2nd photoshoot. Before taking photos at this group of people, I approached them and asked for permission before taking photos as I have been told that you have to ask for their permission before taking photos or problems could occure later. I have noticed that the difference in people's attitude and behaviour changed quite noticeablily, with comparison to the first photoshoot, I didn't ask for their permission and the players didn't really care or noticed me taking photos, the images turned out to be better. Whereas in the 2nd photoshoot, even though the players didn't look directly at the camera, I could still notice them being conscious in what they do and maybe because they are young people too, they try to look cool and good for the camera.

However, this series focus more on the interaction between players. and I try to capture each players movement to show their individual techniques/tactics.

Reflecting back on this photoshoot
-Need to do some photo editing to adjust the colours and contrast of these images and hopefully get it in the same quality as the initial photoshoot. Because the final images should be read in a series.
-In the 1st photoshoot, I wanted to explore on the shadows cast by the players on the ground which shows their movement and actions. I will go back and take another lot of photos more focused on this subject.
-Also it will be interesting to have close up shots of player's facial expressions. Which will show their emotions and possibly their relationship and interaction with other players. This could be quite intereing.

Project 2 People: 2nd photoshoot

The weather in Wellington hasn't been very sunny after the initial shoots, But I still need to take more photos. With that in mind, I went back on a finer day (but it only stopped raining towards the afternoon! So the images were of a different quality to the initial shoots) hoping to take more photos of players in action.

After the initial shoots I have decided that I wanted to explore more on the players with the following points and really need to refine my concept more with a stronger rationale to support the images:

What am I photographing?
A group of young people in the basketball courts in the city.
Not a planned gathering or a fierce competition, but just a group of people who has strong passion for basketball and to play and enjoy the sunshine with other people's company.

Why did I choose to photography basketball players?
I feelt that young people's buzzing energy and passion for life can be revealed in the basketball courts, a place where they can be carefree and purely endulge in the fun and company of their mates.

The swift movement of the young players makes a game more exciting and their interaction between players shows their relationship with one another, the bonding between one another can sometimes unintentionally shown by the players if they have been playing together for a long time where they have a 'tacit understanding', as well as each individual's tactics which makes each player unique and each plays an important part in the team.
