About Me

My photo
Hello! This is a blog documenting works in progress produced by me in DSDN 144. As the blog title explains it all, I'm a photography newbie. Always had strong interests in photography and loves looking at amazing photographs that captures the 'moment'. Looking forward to explore in the world of lights and shadows and learn more skills on taking the 'wow amaazing!' photo :)

Project 1 Place: Proposal_reflection_2

From the last initial photoshoots, I went through and picked out the strongest images from that series. When I began taking these photos, I had the concept of seeing the supermarket through a child's point of view, seeing everything in an enlargement form with aisles towering over you when you look up at them.

I realised that this was difficult to achieve as the size of the shelves are relatively small and there are not many overpowering shelves that could achieve that effect.

This image shows the concept of the shelves towering over you. Low angle camera shot was used in this photo to achieve that effect. Even though this image has the towering effect it didn't show any qualities of the space.

Images from initial shot_1

This image shows the brightness and freshness of the fruit and produce department. I liked this image becuase of the vibrant colours and it is the first space that you would encounter when you enter the supermarket. The freshness and variety triggers consumer's desire to buy. However, this image could be seen as an advertising shot trying to sell the 'big shiny apples'. I should think about altering the camera angle or the composition of the image, so that it still captures the quality of that space without beening too commercial.

Image from initial shot_2

Perspective lines and order was communicated quite strongly in this image. I like this image becuase it gives the sense of space and shows the large 'airy' quality of the supermarket. The sense of rhythm is really strong in this image where everything is in order and the shelves seems to be extending continuously.

Image from initial shot_3

This image is one of my favourite. Showing the quality of the space which is in the frozen food aisle. There is a sense of loneliness in this image with the woman standing in the distance deciding on what to buy. The emotion that is represented here is of the isolation in this moment, where supermarket is always a place buzzing with movement and people so it was different and quite unique about this image as it shows a 'quiet' and personal moment.

What to do next:
After looking through the images from this photoshoot, I will need to go back and take more. Be more specific and clear about my rationale. Also figure out whats the motif or concept behind the photos.
-What am I trying to communicate?
-How should i capture the quality of the space?
-What do I want the audience to see in the images?

Exercise 2: Aperture/ISO/Shutter Speed

In Studio 2 we were introduced to Exposure which is determined by these 3 things: Aperture/ISO/Shutter Speed, these are the main ingredients that you need to get it right to produce a good photograph.

This exercise was very useful as I learnt how to control and change these settings so that I can achieve a better photography with the right exposure. When we took photos as a group, practising adjusting the different settings allowed us to get different images with different focus points. This will be very helpful when I carry out my own photoshooting for Project 1.

One thing that I found very helpful and interesting was the AWB- white balance, this could alter the quality of the image dramatically if the setting was not set up appropiately.

Examples from our group exercise:

AWB not adjusted.

AWB adjusted.

It is obvious the difference between the two photographs. The 2nd photograph is better because the White Balance is adjusted so the blue tinge is gone, more realistic colours.

Aperture V.S Shutter Speed

1/8 sec, f.22.0, ISO 200

1/6 sec, f.8.0, ISO 80
Adjusting the aperture and shutter speed gives us the ability to freeze or to blur time, giving blurred images to show motion and speed.

Depth of Field:
1/200 sec, f.3.5, ISO 200
The focus point in this image is at the hand, which means any object within the (F1.8) range will be in focus and everything else will be blurry.

1/50 sec, f.11.0, ISO 200
In contrast, this image's focus is futher away (F3.5). As we can see the objects in the distances is sharp compare to the previous image where everything is blurred.

Project 1 Place: Proposal_Initial Shots_1

Place:
Initial shots are taken at places with the theme of public socialising places such as: Saint James Theatre, Paramount Cinema, and the last place with a different theme at New World Supermarket. These initial shots are to help me get use to seeing the place through the camera and looking at the place photographically, which is completely different to seeing the place normally with our eyes.

For this project I want to explore with my camera to communicate the quality of the space, which is the supermarket. The feelings or qualities that I want to communicate is the social aspect of the supermarket, a place where everything is stacked up systematically to attract consumer's attention and makes them have the desire to purchase goods.

Group Exercise

This collection of photos are taken as a group exercise on a number of different ideas. My thoughts on this exercise: quite a fun exercise to be given as I have very limited experience with a SLR camera, with the camera set on automatice it allowed me to explore different angles and composing an image.

Some examples of images that i thought was successful

9) High Angle Shot

13) an extreme close-up in a dog's point of view

7)image that has mainly pale tones / using a landscape format

1)Pattern

2) Shape

5) Contrasting colours

8) an image that is based on tones of similar colour

12)Using a portrait format

4) An image that is based on line

Assignment 1: Fire on Malborough Street 22 July 1975

Photographer: Stanley J. Foreman

Source: BBC.CO.UK

This is an image of a woman and a young girl falling to their death jumping out of their building in a tragic fire. I first came across this image on a research project back in High School, it is such a terrifying photo that left me speechless after looking at it. This was the image that came to mind when we got told to find an image. The most memorable part of this image is not only it captured how helplessly the woman must felt in the fire that jumping out of the building was the only chance that they might survive. But the story behind it of a fireman's heroic effort who tried to grab them had been just seconds away from saving the lives of both. Life is so fragile that every second of it counts.
